6 Tips and Tricks for Choosing the Perfect Window Treatments

Forget paint color — window treatments should be number one on your list of things to consider when designing a room! But with so many styles, colors, and textures to choose from, finding the window treatments that work for your needs and space is often easier said than done.

But lucky for you, that’s why we’re here! We pledge to help everyone find the perfect window covering solution, customized to your preferences and your budget.

If you’re starting your window treatment search, consider these few things before signing on the dotted line.

1. Think Minimalistically

We enjoy an elaborately draped satin curtain as much as the next person, but minimalism tends to suit more homes and styles. But don’t confuse minimalistic for boring — layering fabrics, incorporating patterns and texture into the design, and adding side panels are great ways to subtly turn up the drama.

2. Don’t Be Afraid of Texture

People tend to shy away from texture, and we honestly don’t know why! Wood, vinyl, and PolyCORE shutters give off an elegant look, are easy to clean, and are practically indestructible — talk about a win, win, win!

3. Think Practically

We love that window treatments have the power to transform the look of a room, but it’s important to remember that they also serve a very important function in your home. If your living room or kitchen is south-facing, consider fabrics that will block light and heat.

4. Mix and Match Bold Lines with Fun Curves

Kitchens, especially, tend to be flooded with straight lines. When that’s the case, it’s great to break up architectural lines with patterned and textured products.

5. Understand the Importance of Length (or Lack Thereof)

Typically, designers will hang curtains about 6-inches higher than the window frame. If you’re looking to create even more drama or make your room appear larger than it is, you can add a few inches to that number.

  • Traditional: If you’re going for a traditional look, add a few extra inches to the bottom of your drapes. This will allow them to “puddle” on the floor.
  • Modern: If you want a more contemporary look, you’re going to have to break out the tape measure. For a more crisp look, have your fabric hemmed so that it lays just above the floor (called ‘trouser style).

6. Remember: They’ll Have to Be Cleaned from Time to Time

While you certainly won’t be cleaning your curtains every day, it’s important to remember that they will need freshening up every once in a while. If you chose a hard material, like wood or PolyCORE, you’re in luck! Cleaning harder materials like these can be done with the swift swipe of a microfiber cloth.

If your tastes lie more on the fabric side, this is when it’s important to consider whether you want to have your curtains dry cleaned every time they need to be washed or if you’d rather throw them in your machine at home.

While both options have their pros and cons, it’s important to remember that if your fabrics say “dry clean only,” they are dry clean only! You can easily ruin dry clean only fabrics by throwing them in a washing machine. But, you can spread out the dry cleanings with a vacuum and attachment!

Tips and Tricks — Honorable Mentions

We’re not done yet! Below are just a few more things to take into consideration before swiping your credit card.

  • Typically, if you have patterned furniture or a loud bedding, you should opt for solid treatments (and vice versa).
  • Ensure your curtains don’t look too wide or narrow by making them 2 to 2 ½ times the width of the window.
  • A good rule of thumb is to extend the rod three to six inches beyond the frame of each side of a window.
  • If you’re going with curtains, ask for tie backs! Not only do they allow you to elegantly draw your curtains back and create a new shape, but they also help bring in light and warmth.
